I’m so excited to share our refreshed printable guide for finishing round ornaments in a shop style with no glue.
If you’re new to finishing, want to improve your techniques, or are committed to making 2025 The Year of the Finish, round ornaments are an excellent place to start.
Needlepoint Round Ornament Finish: Shop Style with No Glue
In this guide, you’ll find detailed project instructions for completing a no-glue shop style round needlepoint ornament. This is a great first project because round ornaments are one of the easiest shapes to finish. You’ll learn:
The mechanics of blocking
Making the front and back of your ornaments (aka ‘cookies’)
Assembling them with your own custom-made cording
There’s tons of resources and links in the guide so you can continue your learning path.
What is a No Glue Shop Style Finish?
There’s been a lot of new finishing styles popping up on social media and I hope this helps put some definition around what’s a common style for a shop and most established independent finishers. Shop style means:
Finished with acid free matboard inside
No glue*
Finished fairly flat on the back (may contain one layer of batting on the back, both sides aren’t super puffy)
Has a tightly-twisted handmade cording
No canvas edges showing
Invisible thread is used to secure cording and is virtually hidden
You can read more about my thoughts on glue here but I will say a no glue finish is worth at least trying.
A no glue finish is also called “The Lacing Method” where you use a piece of floss to lace the tabs on the back.
I find the lacing technique a lot easier to correct mistakes, faster, less messy, and it’s the best approach to promote longevity of your needlework. *This is both a stylistic definition (making a true shop style) and a practicality.
